I can't believe you haven't seen... TV edition

Confession time. I’m only now, for the first time, watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve borrowed the DVD’s from my friend Kylie, who has been in love with the show for as long as I’ve known her. I’m really enjoying it, but have a feeling I might have appreciated Buffy more when it was first on TV, in its original context, spoiler-free and fresh. As proud as I am that I “liked Arrested Development before Fox canned it”, I’ve also been a johnny-come-lately fan of many classics:

Deadwood

Completely missed it. I blame Australian television programmers. Not my fault.

Fringe

I’m not too late, Fringe hasn’t been cancelled, but I’m only now getting on board. I love its X-Files-style mythology that is thus far not too confusing. And that last scene of S1? Wow.

Breaking Bad

Watched 3 seasons in 2 weeks. Where do I collect my award? Bring on Season 4! I’m ready. I’ve been waiting for so long… ahem.

The Wire

I don’t feel too bad about this one. Everyone missed it the first time around. Society's fault.

Over to you, readers! What shows are you (maybe shamefully) just discovering for the first time?

  1. The Sopranos is the big one I completely missed. Only started watching it once the last episode had already aired and I'd already been spoiled about how the series ended. And I've never watched The West Wing and feel like this is something that I should be rectifying.

  2. I jumped on late with The Sopranos too Kelly - honestly I feel like I could blame TV programmers for any gaping holes in my TV education (except Buffy - not sure why I never caught on with that one). As for the West Wing, I have them all on DVD. And I'm happy to share!

  3. How about everything HBO has ever produced?!

In Australia, if you rely on regular programming, there is no recourse except to see shows after the fact. Downloads are the only solution, and they're a good one, allowing us to be instantly up-to-date. If not, then we wait for the hype to build and DVDs to be released (and on sale at JB) so we are by default behind the times.

I came late to The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood, The West Wing, Studio 60, Curb Your Enthusiasm - the list goes on. But I have been on-time (downloads!) with Game of Thrones, True Blood, Generation Kill, Breaking Bad, Battlestar Galactica, and comedies like 30 Rock and The Office and Arrested Development.

I think having a list of TV you are yet to watch gives life meaning. On my list is Boardwalk Empire and Treme, and I'm excited that so much enjoyment is still to come!

  4. Mine is now one of my fave shows - True Blood. I only started watching it after the first season aired in the US and I haven't looked back! I'm now watching the latest episodes online and I'm still obsessed four seasons later! I love anything created by Alan Ball really.
